{Crash Challenge} Cat in the Hat party plans

This weekend we’re having CrashBoy’s 2nd birthday party.  It’s probably going to rain.

“The sun did not shine,
It was too wet to play.”

Our house is tiny and certainly won’t fit all our guests comfortably. Oops.  Oh well, hopefully we can distract everyone with lot of fun Cat in the Hat inspired party food and decorations ;)

I’ve received some great ideas and inspiration both on the blog {Crash Test} How to throw a Cat in the Hat Party and also in the forums at Kidspot.  I’ve been trawling Google Image search and now, my new obsession, Pinterest.  There are some amazing ideas and there have been some pretty spectacular parties thrown and cakes decorated out there.  I am completely intimidated!  I usually go a bit over the top (see my Hungry Caterpillar birthday spread for proof), but I think I’ve learned my lesson.  I’m pretty busy this week and the party is on Saturday, so I’ll be up late on Friday night making cake no doubt!  I’ve decided to go for an easy cake idea, one suggested in the Kidspot forums.

“You sank our toy ship,
Sank it deep in the cake.”

Yep, no towering stripey marzipan hat or hand-cramping piped stars for me.  I’m going to shove a ship in a cake!  It will look (hopefully) something like this:

Or perhaps more like this:

I’m going to use a Hummingbird Cake recipe I found on the blog Food of Fancy (a Kiwi in the UK).  Looks kind of the same as above right?

So I don’t look like a complete cop out I’m also going to make some cupcakes, because everyone loves cupcakes.  Especially when they look like this:

or this, if I can find blue fairy floss without going to the Melbourne Show!

For some savoury bites I’m thinking:

I received a bunch of other ideas for snacks like Goldfish crackers served in fishbowls, jelly jigglers in fish shapes, and red, white and blue coloured popcorn. I’ll see how I go!

For decorations I have the printables I received from Mother Duck Said: Let’s Party.  All I need to do is print them and cut them out.  Here’s a preview of the cake toppers:

Cupcake toppers Dr SeussThese will be perfect for the Thing 1 and Thing 2 cupcakes!  I also need to make up the personalised cup wrappers, place names and Happy Birthday bunting.  Downloading each of the files took me quite a while, so in future Renee and Sandra are going to zip their files for customers so it will be much quicker.  Great response to this customer’s feedback ;)

As far as games go, the kids are a bit young and get distracted easily.  So I think we’ll make them Cat in Hat hats and face paint little black cat noses and whiskers.  If I get a chance I’ll make them tails too!

So, what do you think?  Am I up to the challenge?!?!
