{Crash Challenge} What to wear for Melbourne Cup

In the lead up to the Melbourne Cup:

  • If you’re a jockey, you diet like crazy and turn up on the day wearing something colourful and shiny
  • If you’re a wannabe fashion filly, you diet like crazy and turn up on the day wearing something colourful and shiny
  • If you’re a mum like me, you laugh like crazy at the thought of dieting and then panic about what to wear because you spend most of your time in trackies and uggs.

Crash Test Mummy Michelle is attending a number of functions throughout the Melbourne Cup festival and has asked me to “Crash Test” what to wear. Bugger.

I mean, which one is the ‘hatinator’?

But never fear, I have a cunning plan. I’ve called in Nikki Parkinson of Styling You, winner of Best Blog in the Sydney Writer’ Centre Best Australian Blogs 2011 Competition. Nikki’s styling tips are fashionable, yet practical. Fabulous, yet real. She’ll help you unlock your personal style (she’ll need a bloody big lock pick to get to mine!).

I’ve asked Nikki to set me a challenge to help Michelle and the rest of the Crash Test Community to find the perfect outfit.

Can you help me Nikki?

Sure thing, Laney!

My challenge to you:
To create an outfit for Melbourne Cup Day using mainly clothes and accessories you already have in your wardrobe.
  1. Choose a dress. Maybe it’s something you haven’t worn for a couple of years or has only been “out for a play” once or twice.
  2. It must be colourful – spring racing is always about colour (except Derby Day) but even more so this year with the stores inundated with colour.
  3. Next, what accessories do you have available? No matchy-matchy please. They should complement each other not look like you’ve stepped off the set of the Stepford Wives.
  4. The hat/hatinator or fascinator … some kind of headwear is compulsory. This might be the thing you need to borrow from a friend (once you know what you are wearing for the rest of your outfit), buy new or, if you’re feeling crafty, make (Lincraft offers great supplies).

Join me in the challenge!

I’m going to try and put some looks together over the next week. Please join me in the fun, whether you’re going to the races or not. It would be really interesting to see what we could pull out of our wardrobes in a pinch.

I would love to see your photos on the Crash Test Mummies Facebook page, so start rifling through the wardrobe, get snapping and upload them.

I’ll meet you back here with all the pics, including my own (or just my own if you don’t join in ;)) for a wrap up next Tuesday 25th October.

Are you going to join me?

Our time starts . . . now!

Laney

  1. I have my oufit ready for a day at the track – not Flemington but will be in a marquee and potentially messy as it’s my girlfriend’s birthday! Enjoy the challenge everyone.

Thanks so much for the challenge Nikki. I’m calling in my sister in law with a bit of a colour rescue ;)

  2. Oooh how exciting! really you can’t go wrong with Nikki on your side, that woman knows what she is talking about!

I don’t think we have any Cup parties to go to this year but should raid my wardrobe just out of interest, I am sure there would be something in there if I looked hard enough.
Can’t wait to see the pics!

All my dresses are black, brown or grey – how drab. I might be bit challenged to fit into a couple of them too ;)

  4. Jess says:

Well I have never been big on racing, but I love a challenge! I have just the dress too. Not sure about the head wear thought!

My cupboard seems void of colourful dresses :( Good excuse to go shopping I guess.  I love making fascinators though, I feel it may very well be a secret calling (even if I do say so myself)

Yes, my cupboard is full of black and grey! You’re clever to make your own fascinators. Please post some on the FB page. Would love to see them, just tag CTM in your photo so it comes up in the Fan Album.

  7. Nee Say says:

Races aren’t my thing (neither is style) but sometimes I wish they were as my friend makes some gorgeous fascinators & I’d love an excuse to buy one!!

That’s a handy friend to know! I’m wondering how I’ll look with a fascinator now that my hair is so short.

  8. Debbie says:

I’m not into the races, but in my dreams I love to frock up. I’ve just bought a gorgeous dress for a wedding this Friday – and for the first time ever (aside from my own wedding) will be wearing some headwear. Look forward to seeing what others put together.

I think it’s more about the dressing up than the races themselves ;) Have a great day on Friday in your new outfit! Post a picture?

  9. Paps says:

Good luck with all this. Hope you enjoy.

  10. I have absolutely nothing id wear to melbourne cup. How sad is that! I love the melbourne cup. On my bucket list of things id like to do :)

I’m in a bit of a pinch at the moment too. My wardrobe is looking pretty dull! I’ve been to the Cup a couple of times. The last time we got hit my a massive storm and took shelter under a big umbrella!

  11. Laney this is fabulous, what an awesome idea!!! What a great crash test!

personally I’d be wearing the hat on the right for sure!
