Crash Test Upcycling: Phone charging station

mobile_phone_charging_holder_from_bottle

In the lead up to World Environment Day next month (5th June), I’ve decided to do some small recycling and upcycling projects.  Just little things, like this project today.  My reusing one plastic container might not seem like much, but imagine if one million people threw out one less plastic bottle?  It’s about critical mass!

How to make a holder for charging your mobile phone

This is a great project which I noticed first doing the rounds on Facebook.  I wonder how often people think, “Oooh, that’s a great idea” and then just never do it?  Well, I’ve done it!  I found the original tutorial on make it and love it, bought myself some mod podge and off I went!

I’m not going to go through all the steps in detail, you can use the original tutorial for that, but I will show you how I did some parts.  By the way, I did the cutting out part sitting on the sofa whilst watching ‘The Voice”, I love a bit of multi-tasking ;)

I started off with a dishwash liquid bottle, an old ecostore bottle which I’ve kept because I liked the shape.

I didn’t bother cleaning it up too much or taking of the label before I started marking out the shape and cutting.  Easier to do it after.

I used scissors because we couldn’t find our box cutter anywhere.  It would probably be easier and neater with a box cutter.

However, the lack of a box cutter did pose a problem when it came to figuring out how to cut the hole for the plug.  Hubby went out to the garage and came back with his drill and nested drill bits.  Looked a bit serious, but did the job.  Notice he did this by drilling into a piece of firewood on the kids’ table.  As you do!

I finished the rest of the project the next day, sitting out in the sun.  It’s pretty easy, just mod podge it and wrap material around and mod podge it again!

Then you just cut around the edge of the plastic to trim off the excess material.  Really quite easy and didn’t take me long at all!

So, are you going to make one?
