Who I am, depends on who you are

I’m joining in for the first time with Eden Riley’s Fresh Horses Brigade meme because she’s asked Edenland readers, “Who the hell are you?” I thought about it and decided I couldn’t answer it, so here I am writing anyway.

I could easily tell you who I used to be: overly confident, underminingly insecure, a perfectionist, annoyingly good at things. But I can’t tell you who I am now.  A lot has happened between then and now.

I can tell you I’m not a good housewife with a perfect house, and I don’t spend my entire day teaching and entertaining my children with endless crafts, activities and educational toys.

But I do have two beautiful, well-adjusted, confident, resilient and caring children who are so smart.

Because of who I am.

**

I can tell you I’m not very reliable in the bedroom (as in tidying it or otherwise) because I’m always dead tired, and I didn’t buy my husband a birthday present this year because I was the busiest I have been all year.

But I have an adoring, supportive husband who knows the value of love and tenderness.

Because of who I am.

**

I can tell you that I’m not a trained writer, or an expert in parenting, or a life coach at any stretch of the imagination.

But there are strangers and now friends who feel a little more ‘normal’ and have learned the value of making life easier, taking care of themselves and having fun.

Because of who I am.

**

I could tell you lots of things that I hope I am and would like to be, but don’t measure me on who I think I am . . .

Judge me for yourself.

I am nothing to you other than the impact I have on your life.

Laney x

Thank you ‘Me’! The weekend has been a bit of a waste with us all being sick, but at least we have tomorrow off too!

  8. Great post Laney. Love the last bit – people always judge us differently than we judge ourselves

Thank Nat. It’s the plain truth. People will always judge us and they won’t always have the facts we know about ourselves, but from the outside all that we show is who we are to them.

  9. “Because of who I am”. Brilliantly said.

Loved this post. You are a talented, beautiful, funny and strong woman!

Now that I’ve read yours, yes, we are coming from the same place. You just said it far more eloquently than I ever could! I’m still kicking myself that we didn’t get to talk properly at DPCON. We must catch up, we are in the same city afterall!

  12. What a great post! Great writing – love the style.

  13. Gorgeous Laney. It’s quite poetic. Especially the last line.

  14. It’s so much easier to say what we’re not. I love the way you’ve worked the theme, so cool to see everyone taking a different slant on the same question.

  19. I wrote a very similar post months ago that I linked up with Eden. I wrote about no so much the impact I have had on others but the character I am or play as defined by how others see me.

But I love your take on this topic.

    Love & stuff

We are definitely many things to many people. Women are definitely multi-faceted (is that why we’re so good at multi-tasking too?)

  20. Such a powerful post… You have had more impact than you know…. (and on me!)
