What can I say about this trip to New York? Firstly, it's surreal. I can't believe that I'm here instead of scraping weet bix off the floor at home.
But at the same time, I feel like I live here. Perhaps it's because I'm living in a real New Yorker's apartment, with all her stuff. Like I'm her for now! Fiona and I are staying in Greenwich Village. We already feel at home here. Yesterday we walked up into Midtown along 5th Avenue (Park Avenue). It was loud and overwhelming. We were dwarfed by giant buildings, some who have been looking down on folk for centuries, others, like the new Trade Centre, rising from the ashes to give new hope. Back in the village it felt cooler, quieter, more relaxed. This is our part of town. Our home base, our relief. It's where we can trade diners and chain restaurants for fresh food markets and jazz clubs. Where even the honk of a horn sounds a little friendlier. Where we can pretend to be locals and fool the tourists. New York is to be experienced. It's not something I can give you a running commentary on. You need to feel it, smell it, sit quietly and observe it. The best I can do it try and capture a small slice of the Big Apple and bring it home to you via my photos. Today I'm off to Blographer, a photo blogging event, to try and learn to do just that. I hope I can do it justice. I hope you will get to see the New York I am seeing, and loving. Laney x

I am so glad to hear you say that about midtown and the village. I was worried you might wish you hadn’t taken my advice and were up in midtown instead. Can’t wait to see your pics – the ones that Fi has posted have made me feel like I was back there with you!

I totally agree that New York has to be experienced, smelt, tasted, walked, shopped, explored. Nothing else quite comes close! Living vicariously through all of you at BlogHer.
