How to wear out your kids #001

I spend a lot of time at the mercy of my super active kids (so do their clothes, and my washing machine!).

Welcome to my new little project where I’ll attempt to find and share ways to wear out your kids!

#001 is:

The CrashKids are always up for a bit of rough and tumble, and at the zoo there’s plenty of room for it.

Now when I say take them to the zoo, I don’t mean all day. The idea is just to wear them out, not me as well!

Our trip last weekend served two purposes. It was of course part of the BIG W kids clothes crash test and we also took the opportunity to renew our family zoo membership.

Having a zoo membership is a great way to pop in and out of the zoo, especially over summer. It’s more affordable than buying a full priced ticket each time you go, and you don’t feel like you have to stay all day.

The kids don’t see everything all at once, so there’s always something new and fun for them as well as going back and visiting their favourite animals.

It’s also a great place to meet up with friends, especially if you are spread out around the city. (Heads up to all my Melbourne mates who haven’t renewed your membership yet!).

The zoo environment is just as stimulating as the animals. There are plenty of opportunities for them to:

She wears Kids Basic Bucket Hat $4.94 – Girls Stripe Applique Tee $7.96 – Mambo Crop Legging $14.88, all from BIG W

He wears Baby boy legionnaires cap $7.96 – Stripe Print Tee $6.87 – Value Jean dark blue $9.00 all from BIG W

So, can you wear them out without wearing out their clothes?

Well CrashBoy managed dirt, spills, and even a bleeding nose for his beloved Giraffe top to end up like this!

CrashGirl stacked whilst chasing seagulls, skinned her knee through her Mambo leggings without tearing them.

I put CrashBoy’s top aside meaning for it to be soaked, but CrashHubby threw it in the wash. Amazingly it came out clean except for two faint orange stains. I’ve now put it into to soak, and they’re fading already.

So, I’m pretty happy with how the clothes stood up to the CrashKids and the rough and tumble of an afternoon at the zoo.

Crash Test Results

Would I recommend buying BIG W clothes? Absolutely and I think they’ve stretched me beyond their good quality well priced basics this time. The Mambo stuff is pretty cool too!

I give BIG W:

  • 5 stars for value (you get a lot for your money)
  • 4 1/2 stars for quality
  • 4 stars for range (increased from my last crash test)

Can you wear your kids out before they wear out their clothes?

I’d love your tips for my project!

Laney x

  2. We had a Big W shopping spree yesterday. P2 (my almost 3 year old) scored a Dora T-shirt dress. She insisted on putting it on there and then and did her best cat walk strut around the shopping center. She was doing the twirls and the hand on hip posing. It all got too much when she started the hand rolling.

  3. The other day as I strolled around the zoo with the kids I kept thinking that anyone who lives in Melbourne and DOESN’T have a zoo membership is cray-crazy! It’s such good value and a brilliant way to spend a morning!!

Exactly! I love Melbourne Zoo and can’t wait for the summer. We usually get out to Healsville and Werribee too. It’s such great value.

  4. Darby has that same Giraffe top and it has looked like that from time to time! I have managed to get the stains out pretty well!!

How good is the zoo membership – we have one as well – we should have a date there again to wear out the kids!! xxxx

  6. My boys wear their clothes out, but my little lass doesn’t… is that normal??? !! She’s pretty active too, but just not as rough as them at all. When they were tiny they’d always grow out of their little clothes, but once they were running around, clothes got trashed fast!!

CrashGirl isn’t as hard on her clothes as CrashBoy is for sure. I think it is the ‘rough factor’. She’s active, but perhaps doesn’t get as mucky. Maybe it is a girl thing ;) Thanks for dropping by Seana!
