{ Crash Challenge } More healthy snacks for the kids

On Monday I put out the call for ideas on how to get more healthy snacks into the kids.  This is quite a challenge as the CrashKids are ravenous eaters and I often run out of food!

My Crash Challenge

This challenge is as much about organising snack time as it is about what the kids snack on.  The Healthy Kids Association has some good guidelines on healthy snacking.  Most of these I know, but haven’t been doing enough!  My main strategies for this challenge are:

Preparation is key! When we plan the meals for the week, I will also plan snacks so we can stock up.

Consistent snack times. I don’t want the kids to get so hungry that they threaten to bite my arm off!

Late afternoon snack or even a mini meal, to keep them going until our 6.30pm family dinner.

Ideas for snacks

In addition to fruit, vege, crackers, cheese that are the mainstay of our snack time, I am also going to try:

Zucchini, Ricotta and Thyme muffins from the blog Frills in the Hills.  Liss has some great recipes called Lunchbox Legends which are great if you have to pack lunches for your kids.

Tomato Spirals from the BBC show “I Can Cook”.  CrashGirl loved watching this show so I found the “I Can Cook ” game online which she loves even more.  She can learn how to cook online (just like her Mummy!) and then we can cook for real.  A lot more fun, and a lot messier, but hey!

Sunny Biscuits so CrashBoy doesn’t feel totally deprived of his beloved “bib-bits”.  I found the recipe for these on a forum at Natural Parenting.  I chose them, not only because they are healthy, but because they are also ideal for me.  My adrenal fatigue means trying to keep my sugar levels, well, level!  These biscuits are loaded with goodness.  They are also loaded with lots of ingredients and fall outside my ‘easy’ guidelines, but it’s in the name of good health!  Hopefully they taste good!

Well, wish me luck!  Even better, join in and let me know in the comments below.  I’ll be testing this over the next week and will be back with the Crash Test Results on Tuesday 16th of August.
