{Crash Test Wine} All Saints Moscato + Giveaway

Welcome to my third wine review and giveaway in my {Crash Test Wine} Women and Wine series. Before I introduce this week’s woman and wine, here’s the winner of the Moorooduc Estate twin pack:

Congratulations to Yvonne Lim!
You’ve won a bottle each of the Moorooduc Estate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay

Our next woman in wine is the CEO of the family business Peter R Brown Family VineyardsEliza Brown is a mother, a daughter to the late Peter R Brown (one of the Brown Brothers), and sister to Nick and Angela who help her run the family’s two vineyards All Saints and St Leonards in Rutherglen.

All-Saints-Brown-Family

L to R: Angela, Nicholas, Eliza

If you think Eliza’s brother Nick looks familiar, it’s because he was on ‘Farmer Wants a Wife’ ;)

Eliza unexpectedly took the helm of the business at a young age when her father was killed in a car accident.  She left a career in the city a couple of years ago to live in Rutherglen full time, where she can keep a closer eye on the business and give her young children the same country upbringing she had on the banks of the Murray River.

Although Rutherglen is a very old and traditional winemaking region, Eliza and her siblings like to make wines that they and their friends like to enjoy.

Looking at your questions over the last couple of weeks, it seems many of you have a taste for a light and slightly sweet wines.  I lost count of the number of times I recommended a Moscato!  So, give the people what they want I say!

Here’s this weeks wine . . .

2010 All Saints Moscato

Now before I start on my tasting notes, I’ve only tasted the 2010 which is coming to the end of it’s vintage.  The 2011 will be out at the end of next month.

All Saints Moscato

So we know that Moscato is a sweet wine.  I’m not a big fan of sweet unless it’s a dessert or fortified wine.  However, what I liked about this Moscato is that the sweetness is accompanied by a refreshing fizziness (or ‘frizzante’ as wine toffs will say ;))

It’s like fruit salad in a glass with a dash of sherbet-y sorbet, and at just 5% of alcohol I could have this wine for breakfast – couldn’t I?  Actually you could drink it in the afternoon too as an aperitif, or with a nice fruity dessert, or even cheese.  Hell, you could probably drink with with your Grandma’s scones!

Would I recommend it?

Sure would.  We’ll be drinking it for Christmas brunch because you can enjoy (quite) a few glasses and not get too tipsy and burn the turkey ;)

Where can I get it?

You can buy it pretty much anywhere for around $15.

How will I remember the name?

The brother’s name is Nick from “Farmer Wants a Wife”
Then think ‘St Nick’ because it’s good for Christmas brunch
While we’re on the topic of Saints, think All Saints!

  7. I usually but at Dan Murphy’s or liquorland and sometimes get a great deal at Grays online!

  8. I don’t have many options for my wine shopping. I head to the local Bottlo and get disappointed by the selection… or lack there of!

I haven’t been able to find the other two wines you have showcased yet. We are getting a Dan Murphys in town early next year though, so hopefully I will be able to track them down then.

  10. I usually go to Dan Murphy for our wines etc… I should add how really sad and slack this is of me because i live in the Hunter Valley NSW not too far from our fabulous vineyards and wineries.

  11. I’d love to have a stash of pretty yummy wines to try once this baby pops out!

  14. Hi Laney When we lived in Sydney, we used to buy our wine at  60 Darling St, Balmain. Now we’re in Hobart, we tend to use local bottle-shops where the staff know their wine as opposed to the big supermarket type barns. J x

  20. I also find Dan Murphy’s is good for buying wine. This sounds lovely. I like dry whites, but enjoy a dessert wine once in a while, but don’t often treat myself. This sounds like the go for a Christmas treat!

These posts are fantastic, I’ve got to put this one on my ‘to-try’ list when I finally stop being pregnant and feeding babies! :)

  24. I have to say that Moscato is my drink of choice.. its just so lovely.. and you can drink and drink it and not feel all the effects!!

And like others Dan Murphy’s is my place of choice…. reasonable prices and reasonable range!

  25. Dan Murphy’s all the way – or any other large, discount warehouse outlet. Alternatively, I have been known to procure my wine via 5 finger discount, from my parents’ collection. Yep, no different to when I was 16yrs old – except now I don’t bother trying to be covert about it. PS – you have the most awesomest (my word, you’re welcome) giveaways! I went to school wtih a girl whose parents owned a winery and, at the time, I had no clue how relevant and important wine would be to my adult self. Totally should’ve made that girl my bestie…

  26. We go to Dan Murphy’s or to the cellar door of wineries, as we live close to Rutherglen. It’s nice to make a day of going and selecting.

  32. Hi there… I usually get in from cellabrations or Dan Murphy. I prefer red wines as compared to sweet or white wines/ I’ve tried Moscato once before but can’t really remember the taste. I’d be great to try it again and who knows I may start liking sweet wines!!

  33. Wendy Hatton says:

No shops where I live :( I rely on my daughter to bring me something nice to quaff when she comes to visit. What a surprise for her is I have a lovely stash on hand to share!

  41. don’t know why, but my reply didn’t list.. i love moscato, it is beautiful on a hot summer day, light enough for a luncheon, sweet enough to appeal with the fizz to stop it being ‘lollywater’, and low alcohol which means less “embarrassing flashbacks” and a lovely time without worrying too much

  46. I love Moscato – it is my favourite wine to drink and can enjoy at least two glasses before being tipsy (I would normally burn the turkey on one:)
I usually just buy my wine from the local BSW while doing my groceries and if I am super organised and want something that I know that they dont have I will go to a little local cellar.

  47. Hmm Moscato, just in time for summer. I usually go to Dan Murphys for my wine!

  48. Whenever we feel we’re getting low on wine, we head out for a weekend in Margaret River. Once there, we buy approximately 3 times as much wine as we could ever drink. We do this once or twice a year – I’m thinking of adding a wine cellar to our home ;)

  54. I try to visit Chambers Rosewood winery, in Rutherglen once a year! They try things i just don’t see anywhere else, and even if not all the experiments are a success, they sometimes turn out some truly special wines.
