We’re up to week 3 of March to Your Own Beat. I thought I’d start with a bit of a recap. March to Your Own Beat is all about discovering who you are, what motivates you, what’s important to you. These answers combined with what you’re good at help define what makes you uniquely you. Hopefully you are starting to see someone other than just “Mum” and starting to realise what you can offer as a person, or if you want a brand.
This week’s prompts are really hard because I’m asking us to talk about what we’re good at. Nobody likes to do that do they? Tall poppies and all that. Are you squirming with discomfort? I am, so let’s start with something easy . . .
If I was an animal I’d be a . . .
Fox! A quick and clever wit and an ability to think on my feet and outfox my foe. Well, I don’t really have any foe, but in a business world “The Quick Brown Fox jumps over the Lazy Dog” – guess which one I identify with? ;). Actually it is what I have named my consultancy which I am planning on launching this year:

If I could have any role I would be . . .
my own boss. I am a terrible employee. Every business I have worked in I’ve been able to quickly figure out what’s going wrong and how to fix it. Unfortunately all of my bosses were completely stubborn and I drove them nuts trying to convince them what they needed to change! So really, there’s nothing for it than for me to be my own business and drive myself nuts instead.
My hidden talent is . . .
Scrabble! I love it and all the sneaky and creative ways you can use the different letters to score major points. I’m playing a bit of Words with Friends, but it’s just not the same.

The most creative thing I’ve ever done is . . .
start Crash Test Mummy. It was hugely creative for me to design the website with my original branding, especially as I have almost nil graphic design skills. But it was taking a personal need and an idea that was my own and turning it into something real that has brought me much satisfaction.
People come to me when they need help with . . .
seeing the bigger picture. I’m good at putting things in context and helping people get past immediate problems by helping them see the bigger goal.
The sorts of problems I like to solve are . . .
strategic. Like the example above, I love assessing the situation and figuring out the best way forward. I’m a planner first, but once I have that plan I’m quick to jump in and get on with it!
Someone else thinks I’m good at . . .
CrashHubby thinks I’m good at being a mum. Thank goodness he does, because I sure doubt myself every single day.
::
Whew! That was hard. But things are starting to come together. I’m excited about what I’m discovering about myself and how it translates into the path I’ve chosen for myself.
Activity for Week 4
The next step is having the guts to do it. What stands in our way, keeps us from marching to the beat of our own drum? There are no prompts this week. Well there were, until I found this awesome quiz on Oprah to discover “What’s holding you back?”. It will be far more helpful for us all than the prompts I came up with!
Go do the quiz (it takes a few seconds to load – be patient) and over the next week have a think about the answer it gives you. Were you surprised by the answer? What are the next steps you can take? Are you ready to March to Your Own Beat?
Next week I’ll be posting my answer. Come and share yours, either in the comments or link up a post. For those who wrote a post for Week 3 – here’s the linky! Please support the other posters :)
Cheers,
Laney x

I love this challenge that you are doing Laney. Wish I was in the right headspace to play along! Maybe I’ll April or May to my own beat ;P Love your consultancy name too!
Nee Say’s last post..Keep calm & carry WHAT??
You can do this challenge whenever you like ;). It does help to be in the right headspace. I found this week’s challenge particularly difficult to get started.
Laney! I love your business logo! And the name! Very very cool :)
Kelly Exeter’s last post..March to your own beat – Week 3
Thanks Kelly. My poor little fox has been waiting patiently for me – I’ll get there, eventually!
I am so writing a post for this one! I never think about what I am good at – and never have any confidence in my job as a Mum :)
This is going to be a challenging one!
I loved reading your list of what you are good at. To be a fox would be different but cool!
Lisa Wood’s last post..Wordless Wednesday Green Smoothies
That’s great Lisa, I’m glad this one has grabbed your imagination. It’s a tough one, but really makes you feel good about yourself. Good luck and don’t forget to come back and link up :)

I love the name of your new consultancy… very catchy!!
wow, I’ve been sitting here writing mine a little late and just ducked over to have a read of yours… and i must say, I could just copy yours word for word and it would almost explain me! except maybe the fox bit!!
